The importance of images in eCommerce stores can’t be emphasized enough. They play a vital role in product’s sales. High quality product images produce 70% more sales than poor quality images.
An image placeholder is a dummy image needed to be replaced with the actual product image. Magento by default displays the Magento logo as the initial placeholder image which you can easily replace with the actual product image.
In Magento 2, it’s extremely easy to upload a product image placeholder to override the default Magento logo. Following the steps below will do this.
Click Save Config when you are done.
By default Magento 2 provides four types of image roles - Base, Small, Thumbnail & Swatch Image. It's better to add four different images to each product in order to improve your products presentation. By default you'll see the Magento logo as shown in above image.
Base Image: This is the main image displayed on the product details page. This is the largest and highest-quality version of your image.
Small Image: This version of the image is used on pages with multiple products, such as homepage, category listing and search results layouts.
Swatch Image: This version of the image is used when a product is available in more than one colors. Customers can click on each color to see how the product looks with that it.
Thumbnail Image: This version of the images appear in the media/thumbnail gallery, the shopping cart and some related products blocks. These images can be around 100 pixels high and 100 pixels wide.
