Oxford University Press Pakistan - Academic Bookstore Upgrade on Magento 2

Project Overview

Modernizing a Legacy Platform for a World-Class Publisher

Oxford University Press Pakistan, the Pakistani branch of the world's oldest and most respected academic publisher, had been running its e-commerce operations on an aging Magento 2.2.x platform. While the store served students, educators, and institutions across Pakistan, the underlying technology had grown increasingly fragile — a liability for a brand synonymous with reliability and quality.

FME Extensions was engaged to perform a full platform upgrade to Magento 2.4.x, accompanied by a deep customization of the storefront experience. The project spanned the homepage, category pages, and the checkout flow, alongside the integration of three FME-built extensions to extend store functionality in meaningful ways.

The result is a fast, secure, and feature-rich online bookstore that reflects the prestige of the Oxford brand while serving the practical needs of Pakistan's diverse academic community.

The Challenges

What We Were Up Against

Migrating a live academic bookstore is not a simple version bump. The project surfaced several interconnected challenges that demanded careful planning and expert execution.

Outdated Platform With Security & Compatibility Risks: Magento 2.2.x had reached end-of-life, leaving the store exposed to unpatched security vulnerabilities. Third-party extensions, payment gateways, and PHP dependencies had grown incompatible over time, making the upgrade path complex and technically demanding without disrupting live store operations.

A Dated Storefront That Didn't Reflect the Brand: The existing homepage, category pages, and checkout flow were built for function, not experience. Navigation was cluttered, product discovery was poor, and the visual design lagged far behind the standards expected of a globally recognized academic brand — reducing buyer confidence and conversion rates.

Missing Functionality Critical to the Academic Market: Academic publishers have unique requirements: customers need access to digital syllabi and supplementary materials, payment methods need to be managed by region and customer group, and a structured FAQ is essential for institutional buyers. The vanilla Magento setup had no native tools to address these needs effectively.

Our Solutions

How We Built a Better Store

Every challenge was matched with a deliberate technical or design solution, combining a clean platform migration with purposeful customization and targeted extension integrations.

Magento 2.2.x to 2.4.x Platform Upgrade

We performed a full, zero-downtime upgrade of the Magento core, bringing the store onto the latest stable 2.4.x release. All custom code, third-party extensions, and database schemas were meticulously audited, refactored, and migrated with full QA coverage.

Custom Homepage Experience

A fully redesigned homepage was built to serve as a curated gateway into OUP Pakistan's catalogue. Dynamic banners, featured collections, subject-based navigation blocks, and academic season promotions give returning and first-time visitors a rich, guided entry into the store.

Enhanced Category Page Layout

Category pages were rebuilt with improved filtering, cleaner grid layouts, and subject-specific content blocks. The experience now helps teachers, students, and curriculum coordinators navigate large catalogues by subject, level, or curriculum standard with far greater ease.

Streamlined Checkout Flow

The checkout was redesigned for clarity and completion rate. Redundant fields were removed, address handling was localized for Pakistan, and the visual hierarchy was restructured to reduce cognitive load — particularly for institutional buyers placing bulk academic orders.

FME Product Attachments Extension

Using our Magento 2 Product Attachments extension, OUP Pakistan can now attach syllabi, teacher guides, sample chapters, and curriculum documents directly to product pages — allowing educators to evaluate materials before purchase and reducing pre-sale enquiries to the team.

FME Payment Restrictions + FAQ Extensions

Our Payment Restrictions extension gives OUP Pakistan granular control over which payment methods appear by customer group, region, and cart conditions — critical for managing institutional purchase orders. The FAQ extension powers a clean, searchable knowledge base that handles common queries about orders, delivery, and curriculum editions.

Our store is faster, far more professional, and finally equipped with the tools our academic audience expects. Project Outcomes

The Results That Followed

The upgraded platform and redesigned storefront delivered measurable improvements across performance, security, and user experience — building a foundation that scales with the publisher's growing digital ambitions.

Fully Upgraded & Secure

The store now runs on a fully supported Magento release with current security patches, PHP 8.x compatibility, and a clean, maintainable codebase ready for future growth.

Improved Checkout Conversion

The streamlined checkout and localized payment controls reduced drop-off at the final purchase step — particularly for institutional and bulk buyers navigating payment by PO.

Fewer Pre-Sale Support Requests

Product attachments and the structured FAQ deflect a significant volume of pre-purchase enquiries, freeing up the OUP Pakistan support team for higher-value interactions.

Rebuilt Page Experiences

Homepage, category, and checkout pages were redesigned from the ground up — each tailored to the specific needs of academic buyers browsing textbooks, references, and curriculum materials.

Performance Improvements

Magento 2.4.x brings Elasticsearch, improved caching, and Varnish support out of the box. Combined with frontend optimizations, the store loads significantly faster on Pakistan's mobile-first audience.

Scalable Foundation

The upgraded platform, clean custom code, and three integrated FME extensions give OUP Pakistan a robust, extensible store they can confidently build on for years ahead.
