The Ecommerce boom and new technologies have for long had a strong impact on American buying behaviors, including: product evaluation, payment method and buyer’s expectation with product and services. Recent Consumer’s Demographics and online shopping statistics shows that 96% Americans have made an online purchase at least once in their lifetimes, with 80% buying something online just last month.

This wave of online shopping is expected to continue making an impact in coming years with the number of online shoppers worldwide projected at 2 billion for 2019, after it was calculated at 1.46 billion in 2015. Online retail sales for physical products will also experience a boost with global consumers expected to shell out $485 billion on online buys; which is a significant increase from their $294.45 billion shopping budget in 2015.

By 2019, the number of digital shoppers would have increased by 19 million, after it was reported at 205 million just two years ago. However, studies show that online shopping hasn’t completely taken over consumer buying behaviors. In most cases online shopper still rely heavily on physical stores to meet their demands; except for weekly shoppers who are mostly participate in online purchasing. Moreover, majority of US Adults (around 37%) shop less frequently online, while 28% of them shop online on a monthly basis and only 15% use it for their weekly buying needs.

The technological gap that comes with each generation has also a significant impact on buying habits. Millennials are at the fore-front of all online shopping trends by making 67% of their purchases via online stores. However, senior citizens still show a strong disposition for physical stores, which account for 72% of their purchases. It appears that single people view online shopping as a better time investment, getting 49% of their products from online, while families prefer to spend time in physical stores.
